Designed and lived in by architects Mayo Takato and Takeshi Odaki of architectural firm TOASt, Somosomo House is a compact Tokyo apartment where every element has purpose. Furniture acts as structure, not filler, and living small becomes an ongoing act of design. Stripping back the original divided layout of tatami rooms and narrow corridors, the pair reimagined the interior around a series of box-like volumes containing everyday functions — the bath, toilet, washing machine, wardrobe, and kitchen — freeing the rest of the space for living and light. The renovation introduces clever, handmade solutions: a stacked IKEA bunk bed that converts from sofa to double bed, translucent polycarbonate partitions and sheer curtains that reflect and diffuse light, and raised furniture designed so their Roomba can roam freely beneath. A DIY bookshelf, multi-use kitchen trolley, and flexible dining table continue the theme of modularity and play.
